R.A. No. 8488 “ An Act converting the Municipality of Victorias, Negros Occidental, into a component City, to be known as the City of Victorias.”

Republic Act No. 8488 is an act converting the Municipality of Victorias into a component city of Negros Occidental, to be known as the City of Victorias.

Victorias, a progressive town in the 3rd Congressional District of the Province of Negros Occidental was converted into a component city when Republic Act No. 8488 was signed into a law by then President Fidel V. Ramos last February 1998 ,11 at the Malacañang Palace, Manila. Witnessing the signing were officials and department heads of Victorias led by Honorable Severo A. Palanca and other key officials of the House of Congress and the Senate.

As requirement of the City Charter, a plebiscite for the ratification of R.A. No. 8488 was held on March 1998, 21. The overwhelming YES votes of 15,985 ratified the conversion of Victorias into a component city.

On March 1999, 21, Victorias City celebrated its 1st Anniversary dubbed as the ‘‘Kadalag-an Festival’’. It is a festival of rejoicing and celebration for the triumph of the municipality now a city against many adversities and trials that come along the way in its struggle for peace, progress and development for the attainment of its vision and mission.
